Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) provides financial support to eligible 16 to 19 year olds who want to continue learning.
How to apply
The Scottish Government require a new application for EMA to be made each academic year. Applicants can apply for EMA online on the Council’s website at www.highland.gov.uk/ema

To be eligible for EMA for the academic year 2019/20 applicants’ date of birth must be between 1 March 2001 and 28 February 2005.
Household income is assessed on gross taxable household income for the period April 2019 to March 2020. The household income thresholds for EMA for academic year 2020/21 are as follows:

Apply without delay
- To be eligible for a full year award the application must be received by the EMA Unit by 30 September 2020.
- If the applicant’s date of birth falls between 1 March 2001 and 30 September 2004 they may be eligible for an EMA from the start of the academic year 2020/21, 11 August 2020.
- If the applicant’s date of birth falls between 1 October 2004 and 28 February 2005 they may be eligible for an EMA from the start of the January term 2020/21, 6 January 2021.
