As part of the N5 and Higher English course all pupils submit a portfolio of writing.  This folio is worth 30% of their final mark.  Due to SQA changes, this year pupils will only submit one final piece instead of two.  This means this piece will be worth the full 30% of the final grade instead of 15% so it is important it represents the best work of each pupil.  Pupils have already completed a first draft broadly creative piece.  They now need to decide if they wish to pursue this piece and do a final draft based on the feedback from their teacher.  If they do not feel this piece will represent their best work they have been given the option to produce a persuasive piece.  The following deadlines apply to all our N5 and Higher pupils in S4-6:

20th November: Topic Chosen and research complete

2nd December: Planning sheet filled in and first 300 words of the essay

11th December: Higher pupils hand in either a complete first draft of persuasive or a complete final draft of their broadly creative (max 1300 words)

18th December: Higher pupils hand in either a complete first draft of persuasive or a complete final draft of their broadly creative (max 1000 words)

If you would like to support your child with this you can access video guides via the links below.  Pupils also have access to these on their google classroom.

·         Persuasive 2: Writing the essay https://youtu.be/rgPez3FQ27Y

Encouraging your son or daughter to thoroughly proof read their piece before submission would also be an excellent way to support them.  Some tips include:

·         Reading aloud to listen for natural pauses that indicate where punctuation should be

·         Highlight the first word of each sentence to check for varied sentence beginnings

·         Read the essay backwards- this helps your brain spot spelling mistakes because it is not concentrating on meaning

·         Let it sit- proof reading straight after writing is not as effective as leaving a gap between completion and checking

Good luck to all senior pupils and we look forward to reading your work!
