Day 4 – Puffins, Volcanoes & Belugas!
Today’s adventures took us by (electric!) ferry to the beautiful Vestmannaeyjar Islands, where we explored the fascinating island of Heimaey – famous for the powerful 1973 volcanic eruption.
We began with a walking tour of the town, then visited the moving Eldheimar Museum, built over houses buried in ash and lava flows. We learned about traditional Icelandic life and the resilience of a community that refused to give up and battled the lava flows.
Next, we visited the Sea Life Sanctuary where we met some of the island’s marine life – and had the unforgettable experience of seeing Little Grey and Little White, two Beluga Whales rescued from bad conditions in a Seaworld in Asia. Only this week they were moved to the centre for their health check. You can watch the documentary here!
To end the day, we travelled to the dramatic cliffs of Heimaey, where we watched hundreds of puffins nesting and diving.

Day 3 – South Coast Adventure!
Our Iceland Geography Study Tour continued today with an action-packed journey along the stunning south coast.
We kicked things off at the Lava Centre, exploring the explosive volcanic forces that shape this incredible island.
Next stop: Seljalandsfoss – waterproofs on! We braved the spray and walked behind the falls, seeing differential erosion in action.
Then came a true highlight – glacier hiking on Sólheimajökull! With expert guides, we trekked across ice, crevasses, learning all about glaciation and climate change first-hand.
Afterwards, we explored the colourful town of Vík, before heading to the dramatic Reynisfjara black sand beach, famous for its basalt columns, sneaker waves and eerie legends.
We rounded off the day with a quick photo stop at the mighty Skógafoss waterfall.
Well done to our 2025 YPI winners, who went to Perth National YPI Event along with other winners from the Highlands in order to celebrate their success in the competition this year. These students won £3000 for Crocus Highland, which will go towards making toolkits for secondary school students who have experienced a bereavement and need some support. Superb!
We kicked off the day soaking in the steamy geothermally heated waters of Sky Lagoon, relaxing Iceland-style with epic views over the North Atlantic.
โ Then it was off to explore the Golden Circle
Geysir – Strokkur didn’t disappoint, erupting sky-high every few minutes.
Gullfoss – a powerful glacier-fed waterfall
Þingvellir – Standing between two continents at the rift valley
Kerið Crater – A vibrant volcanic crater lake with surreal colours
An unforgettable day packed with geysers, glaciers, tectonic plates, and volcanic landscapes – Iceland at its finest!

Well done to the Inverness Royal Academy team who entered the Sue Hastie Memorial Cup at Moray Sports Centre, Elgin on Sunday 8th June to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Nurses. The team won some games and finished in 6th place overall, against many older, more experienced players. The tournament is hosted every year by Lossie Ladies Netball club in memory of Sue Hastie, a former Player, Umpire and Schools netball coordinator from Buckie, who was hugely devoted to the development of netball in Highland and Moray. Mrs Blair [ASN] who was one of the tournament umpires, was most impressed by the IRA team's tenacity and good humour throughout the whole event. It was also nice to have an event where male netball players are encouraged to play too. Sue's son is a real " impact" player who returns every year to play in memory of his mum.
School will close for the summer on Thursday 3rd July at 12 noon.
The transport arrangements are as follows:
Croachy Bus - 12noon
Whitebridge Bus - 12noon
Torness Bus - 12noon
Foyers Bus - 12.30pm (service bus leaves town at 12.20pm)
๐โ๏ธ Our geography study tour to Iceland has officially begun! After a long journey, we hit the ground running with a visit to the Bridge Between Continents, where we walked across the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, standing between two tectonic plates. ๐บ๏ธ
Next, we explored some nearby hot springs, getting up close with Iceland's geothermal wonders. Then we travelled to the newly deserted town of Grindavík, where we drove over fresh lava flows and witnessed first hand the powerful aftermath and destruction from recent volcanic eruptions. ๐

๐ฌ Exploring Film Opportunities with Eden Court ๐ฅ
Our NPA Film and Media students had a fantastic visit from Drew Tremlett at Eden Court! ๐
Drew provided invaluable insights into the vibrant film industry in Scotland and the exciting opportunities available for aspiring filmmakers right here in the Highlands at Eden Court.
During this informative session, students learned about various roles in film production, including director, writer, camera operators, and sound technicians. ๐๏ธโจ
Our students engaged in hands-on discussions and creative exercises. Drew also guided us through the creative process of developing our own stories for film, delving into different genres and the art of composition to convey meaning on screen.
A big thank you to our DYW school coordinator for arranging this visit and to Eden Court and Drew Tremlett for inspiring our students and helping to ignite their passion for filmmaking! ๐
Our Bothy Residential Trip arrived in Badaguish yesterday for an action packed week. Despite mixed weather, everyone is enjoying themselves and getting involved in all the activities on offer.
