In order to help our pupils revise and our parents to support revision at home, the English Department would like to share this guide to effective revision.

The first half of the guide looks at effective strategies and ways to approach revision to add the most value.   It focuses on six strategies:

  • Spacing
  • Retrieval Practice
  • Interleaving
  • Elaboration
  • Concrete Examples
  • Dual Coding

The second part suggests lots of English specific activities and areas to focus on.  This section could be also be useful when creating a revision plan.

We hope this guide will be helpful to pupils and parents and would like to wish everyone a happy Easter break!   See you next term!

A few parents have been in touch to ask how they can support their child to help them do their best in upcoming assessments.  Please be assured that teachers have been working with pupils to help them prepare and be successful in these assessments.  In addition, pupils will be in school during this period so teachers can support pupils with their revision.

There are a number of things that pupils can do to prepare:

  1. Go on to their Google Classroom.  Look through the activities that have been set and compete any that they didn’t manage to do during lockdown.  Teachers have posted activities that will help with revision and assessments
  2. Use BBC Bitesize – there are great resources here for every subject
  3. SQA Past papers and marking instruction can be foundA few parents have been in touch to ask how they can support their child to help them do their best in upcoming assessments.  Please be assured that teachers have been working with pupils to help them prepare and be successful in these assessments.  In addition, pupils will be in school during this period so teachers can support pupils with their revision.
