Published 13/12/23Our Right of the Month examines Article 14. Now that we are in the throes of the festive season , we must remember and respect all religions and beliefs that are featured in our school. It’s fantastic to have a school of such mixed faiths, beliefs and cultures that can all come together at different points across the school year.
Article 14 of the UNCRC says that children and young people are free to be of any or no religion. Their parents can help them make decisions around religion, but:
• a parent can’t force a child or young person to adopt a religion, and
• a parent can’t force a child or young person to stop following a religion.
No religious discrimination
Children and young people shouldn’t be discriminated against because of their religion. They should be treated the same as everyone else, no matter what they believe.
Freedom of thought
Article 14 also covers the right to freedom of thought. This is the right of a person to have their own ideas, thoughts, opinions and beliefs― and for nobody to be able to stop them from holding them. A person has the right to keep their beliefs private, and shouldn’t be forced to reveal them.
Pupils should access the Right of the Month survey and quiz using the RRSA tile on your pupil portal.

In 2016, Antonia Bolingbroke-Kent spent ten incredible weeks exploring Arunachal Pradesh. Cordoned off from the outside world from 1873 until the late 1990s, today the harshness of its terrain, a sensitive political situation, and the need for restrictive permits still make it a little-visited region. Travelling 2,000 miles by motorbike, foot and boat, she went from leech-infested jungles to the gompa-clad peaks of Tawang, followed explorer F M Bailey’s footsteps to the border with Tibet, and trekked deep into the sacred Buddhist kingdom of Pemako. She recounts stories of a journey which was cold, wet, hot, mind-blowingly beautiful, and constantly surprising.

Published 01/12/23Our S3 debaters went to Edinburgh on Thursday to participate in the Young Speaker’s Scotland St Andrew’s Day Debate. They debated motions on making elections compulsory, banning zoos, and whether overseas aid should go to individuals or governments. Our two speakers learned a lot and grew in confidence over the day, and our two judges made great contributions to their panels. Well done!

The Gaelic department have had a busy term so far. Some of our S1s are currently preparing a film for the annual FilmG competition. We have had a good turnout of S1 and S1 pupils to the weekly Gaelic cafe with CnaG for competitions and quizzes. S2 Gaelic have welcomed visitors to tell us about how they use Gaelic as part of their job. Two of our S6s were recently in Stornoway representing the school at the annual Deasbad. S2 and S3 Gàidhlig attended Siuthad Gaelic careers event at Eden Court to learning more about job opportunities. Higher Eachdraidh travelled to Stirling to visit the Wallace Monument, Bannockburn, and Stirling Castle.
